Happy (Vintage) Thanksgiving!!

As is typical here at The Paris Market, we'll take any chance we can get to do things with a little bit of vintage flair. And especially on Thanksgiving of all days, it only feels right to give a little throw back to simpler times & what better way to do so than with these delightful vintage postcards. We have so much to be thankful for this year. From this beautiful city we get to call home to our friends (including furry friends!) & family near & far to this crazy adventure called life, we truly feel blessed. So from all of us here at The Paris Market, here's wishing you the happiest of Thanksgivings! We hope your day includes a generous heaping of rest & relaxation, followed, of course, by a warm meal shared with the people whom you love the most! Bon appétit!

How-to-Tuesday: Holiday Wreaths

Our spoils from the floral market

An easy but fun way to spruce up your home during the holiday season is by hanging a few fresh, floral wreaths. Now, while the task of making your own wreaths may seem a little daunting at first, we hope today's post will show you that the entire process can actually be quite simple. Being wreath making novices ourselves, we started out by drawing inspiration from a lovely book we carry here at the store, The Wreath Recipe Book by Alethea Harampolis & Jill Rizzo. While we didn't follow any of their tutorials exactly, their book is certainly full of all sorts of wonderful ideas that got us off to a great start.

Wreath #1 Ingredients: Foraged Sticks as Base, Eucalyptus Pods, Seeded Eucalyptus, Brunia, & White Lysimachia
Wreath #2 Ingredients: Sandblasted Manzanita Branches as base, Eucalyptus Pods, Assorted Mums, & Wooly Bush

This final wreath is one that we came up with ourselves. What we love about it is that other than the antlers & the ribbon (which you can pick up here at The Paris Market), all of the other materials can be foraged right from your own backyard. And that's the great thing about making fresh wreaths in general, while we used pine, juniper, purple seed eucalyptus, pine cones, & sticks, you can use whatever you have on hand or can find outside around your house.

On the Table: Holiday Cloches

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, we've been spending a lot of time thinking about how we're going to dress our table this year. And we think we've finally got it figured out with these cloches full of wintry vignettes! What we love about this particular idea is that it's not too overtly Christmasy that it won't work for a Thanksgiving table, & yet it's just Christmasy enough to work as a table dressing throughout the rest of the holiday season. Save the time that you would normally spend on redressing your table after Thanksgiving & spend it enjoying the holidays with your family instead. Happy table dressing!

On the Shelf: Winter Wonderland

Although we probably won't be seeing snow any time soon here in Savannah, the cooler temperatures this week have definitely got us feeling ready for winter. And so does our newest entryway display! Full of copper houses, snowy trees, & glistening ornaments, this little winter wonderland has inspired a healthy dose of holiday cheer here at The Paris Market. And while we still have another week to go until Thanksgiving is behind us, we're nearly bursting with excitement to break out the Christmas decorations in our own homes. Be sure to stop by the store soon to satisfy all of your holiday decoration needs!

Taste of Savannah: "Setting the Perfect Holiday Table" with Annette Joseph

The Savannah Food & Wine Festival culminated this past weekend with Taste of Savannah, an event that shut down Ellis Square & was full of all sorts of food & wine tastings, cooking demonstrations, & food-related learning experiences. One such experience was a demo by the entertaining expert for The Today Show, Annette Joseph, in which she shared her tips & tricks for "setting the perfect holiday table." And she did so with items she borrowed from our shelves right here at The Paris Market. Her demo was wonderfully enlightening & we jotted down a few of her party planning tips:

  • Create a party tool kit: Collect all your party materials throughout the year & keep them in one place so you don't waste time running around during the holiday season trying to find things. (For those of you that may be more regular entertainers, a "party pantry" may even be in order.)
  • Before you go out & buy something new, look & see what you already have.
  • Think outside the box! For instance, something as simple as tea towels have so much versatility: use them as napkins, place mats, or even mix & match different ones to make a table runner.
  • Shop like a prop stylist. Collect things as you see them. Chance are, if you like it, it will most likely go with the things you already have.
  • Don't be afraid to mix & match! Different textures create a more interesting table.
  • Give your guests a take-away gift; something for them to remember the event by. For instance, a little bag of pumpkin potpourri. :)

Annette will be joining us here at The Paris Market on December 6, 2014 for a signing of her book "Picture Perfect Parties." Check out the trailer for the book below & stayed tuned to our social media channels for more details on the event as the date gets closer.

Throwback Thursday: Butterfly Collection

If you're a Paris Market regular, or even if you've only been in the store a handful of times, I'm sure you haven't been able to miss our amazing collection of butterflies. From cloches full of these beautiful winged creatures in which they almost appear to be fluttering around, to mounted pieces where they form striking, kaleidoscopic patterns, they are not easy to ignore. However, besides the shear beauty of these unique little insects, what makes this collection all the more fascinating is the story behind where it came from...

And where might that be, you ask? These butterflies once called The Gallery of Creation, formerly located in Stone Mountain, Georgia, their home. The Gallery of Creation, created by Joseph Hunt & his wife in 1978, was a quirky, little natural history museum that set out to "present examples of God's creation in such a beautiful manner that one is inspired to have a greater appreciation for God's handiwork & a greater love for our creator." And I've got to say, religious beliefs aside, it certainly sounds like they had some fascinating exhibits. From nearly 300 animatronic, talking animals to a giant Tyrannosaurus-Rex skull to a 102 lb. iron meteorite, The Gallery of Creation must have been a sight to behold. And, of course, I'd be remiss to mention that they also boasted one of the largest mounted butterfly displays in the United States. After moving to a new location in 2008, the museum officially closed its doors in 2010 & all of the exhibits were sold at auction. And although it's always a little sad to see such a unique business have to shut down, we're certainly glad that we were able to give these beautiful butterflies a new home. Be sure to stop by the store soon to see this wonderful collection for yourself.

Pick of the Week: Adelene Simple Cloth Pillows

Today on the blog, we're featuring one of our absolute favorite finds from High Point Market: Adelene Simple Cloth pillows. With a manifesto just as beautiful as their pillows, it doesn't take much to guess why we love them so much:

This is the story of good things that only get better with time.

Like the hand-stitched cotton quilts, sheets & pillow cases in Grandmother Ada's linen chest, always soft yet sturdy, crisp & cool to the touch.

Or the adventurous character of Nana Elene, whose passion for travel, painting, & piano was as vibrant as her taste in textiles.

Fabric with a buttery hand & a hardy character. Color & texture that satiates the spirit. Past & present through warp & weft.

Adelene Simple Cloth is the art of living simply & living well.

With an emphasis on integrity, ethics & quality, Adelene sources fibers & yarns both locally & globally in order to create impeccable woven goods with character & tactility. For instance, their line of Sturdy pillows are made from heavy-duty, vintage washed, & yarn dyed cotton canvas & feature antique pewter zippers. In their Sunday Best line, they utilize unique fabrics, such as bamboo & viscose, as well as washed linen sourced from Belgium. And although they may source fibers from all over the globe, Adelene's finished goods are custom sewn with pride & care in New England. An American made company that focuses on making beautiful products the right way...what's not to love?
