Cocktail Hour with the Historic Savannah Foundation
This past weekend The Historic Savannah Foundation hosted it's 21st Annual Gala to celebrate our city's historic beauty and the innovation of it's volunteers. We had the pleasure of hosting one of ten Pre-Gala Cocktail Parties here at The Paris Market!

Bookmarked - The Duckling Gets a Cookie!?
This week we are bringing our inner child out by highlighting one of current favorite children's books. The Duckling Gets a Cookie?! brings back the hilarious Pigeon from Mo Williams other award winning children's books, in this tale of a soft spoken duckling, delicious cookie, and jealous pigeon. Postcards from Paris: {Musée Rodin}
A Parisian recently told me that if it rains
two days in a row, and if the third day is just as damp, pick a museum or go to
the cinema and skip work completely.
I might be one of the few people who feel
invigorated by these autumn rainy days, but I took the advice anyway and went
to the Musée Rodin. Even though half of the charm in outdoors, through the
garden it is one of my favourite venues in Paris, regardless of the rain. There
is something very personal and exclusive by the fact that it was once his
residence. Considered to be one of the
largest residences within the city limits, the garden’s peaking views of the
Eiffel Tower and of Invalides’ golden dome set an additional backdrop for The Thinker and The Gates of Hell. It takes only a simple stroll through the
garden, and one instantly escapes the sounds of the city. Manicured shrubs
trimmed into large cones cleverly construe the sculptures until just the right
moment. The chestnut trees have become more warm-toned compared to the lush
green vegetation, and they’ve scattered their chestnuts everywhere.
In the 1954 version of Sabrina, Audrey Hepburn
suggests to Humphrey Bogart that he arrive in Paris on a rainy day because that’s
when the chestnut trees smell their sweetest.
That idea stays with me throughout all of the
seasons.
Moving onward, and within the grand mansion
with creaking parquet wood floors, chipped crown molding, and fireplace mirrors
stained forever by the fires that once were relied on to keep such space warm
and cozy during winter nights. The idea of coned-shrubs masking the art is true
for indoors as well, but instead there are architectural elements unveiling
Rodin’s masterpieces. Winding through the different rooms upstairs, I was
pleasantly distracted by the atmosphere, when suddenly lit by the light from
the window was Cathedral Clasping Hand, with
all of its appeared delicateness.
I appreciate the advice of my friend, without
it I may have let myself spend the entire day at home. As I was leaving Rodin’s
treasured residence I noticed one of his quotes through the giftshop window: “La
beauté est partout”
….even on rainy days

Postcards from Paris: {Passages couverts de Paris}
There are spots in Paris that were ingenious
during their time of introduction, and still maintain that sense of form and
function. Paris’ covered passages are so indicative of the early to mid-1800’s
that whenever I stroll through them I feel immediately transported to a past
golden-age; out shopping on a rainy day in search of a hat of some sorts.
Such covered passages were where a certain
higher class clientele would shop, particularly to escape the sometimes gloomy,
rainy, often odorous, city-street environment. The atmosphere in these passages
is lit with warm light chandeliers and sconces, in addition to the overhead
natural light coming in from the ceiling windows. Often when passing through I
feel that I should be wearing clicking heels. The sound of them tapping along
the decorative mosaic floor is appropriate for the scene; it goes quite well
with the overhead raindrops tapping on the glass rooftop.
I have had several out-of-era sequences occur
while passing through. There is one settle performance that remains vividly in
my mind. Of course it happened on a grey Paris day, in the Galerie Vivienne. A
beautiful, elegant young lady with ruby red lipstick wearing an accommodating headscarf
sat in the decadent Bistrot Vivienne sipping on some sort of warm boisson. She
had a distinct modern edge, not contradicting, but enhancing the reality of the
scene. She sat under a realistic portrait of a 19th century-esque mustached-French
man. Her poise was cool and confident, and I felt completely transported.
The covered passages were eventually replaced
by the ornate and elaborate Galeries Lafayette in 1894. Though some passages
have modernized themselves with updated shops and boutiques, others have faded
out, making these beautiful shopping streets another treasure found and adored
throughout Paris.
