Postcards from Paris: { The Smith's Bakery}

Just like a sombre song by The Smiths, this spring has been grey; London grey; which has inspired an indulgence at a delightful English-spirited boulangerie, The Smith’s Bakery on rue de buci. There is a saying in French, ‘En Avril, ne te découvre pas d’un fil, et en Mai, fais ce qu’il te plaît‘: In April, don’t undress to a thread, but in May, dress as you please. Even though we’re in May no one can escape not wearing a coat which for many, including myself, results in the lingering winter diet of allowances. Though the French are strict in following the rule of moderation; I can’t speak for the English, but after an afternoon gouter of canelé and beignets amongst other delicious English and French sweets accompanied by many English and French diners one can let go of the idea of moderation and of a warm spring, and escape the grey sky with a little sugar in hand.

Currently Inspired: Vintage Postcards

These days most messages are sent either by email or through a text message. Even though images can be attached, opening an email still feels cold. Sorting through our collection of vintage postcards, it's amazing to see how engaging each one is. Every card has such a distinct image that tells a unique story even without a message on its backside. The very act of taking time to handwrite a message has the potential to say more than the message itself. Most people don't have the luxury of time to write to each other by hand, however, if you've ever received a letter from a loved one in the mail, you know how special it is.

The colors on each postcard are so vibrant and classic and are clearly indicative of another time. Looking at each image, we can't help but imagine what kind of adventures people were writing to each other about.

Our postcards have reminded us not only of fond memories before our time, but the effort we used to put into communication as well.

From Garden to Table

The joy of sharing a meal outdoors with loved ones is an experience unlike any other. Being able to feel the breeze and smell the flowers while you eat somehow always seems to make the food taste better. Bringing elements of the outdoors inside, we've featured our favorite garden accessories, intermixed with elegant dishes, to replicate the feel of dining outside.

Our terra-cotta pots and aluminum domes add a rich texture to the tabletop while the warm earth tones offset the crisp whites found in our place settings.

Postcards from Paris: { 'the river between two bookshelves' }

 Someone recently asked me where to find old prints in plastic sleeves, antique maps of Paris, and other novelties of a Paris long-ago. My first thought was to send her to one of the Marché aux Puces, but it was during a weekday, and I know she preferred to stay central without spending too much of her student budget. I then remembered a recent stroll I took along La Seine, and thought of the green-bin vendors situated above the bank of the river, les bouquinistes. Often Monday through Thursday, many of the green-bins are closed and locked up. They seem so serious when they’re closed, dark and heavy with big metal locks. Who would want to break open such ominous objects; someone unfamiliar with the treasures inside could easily dismiss these bins as technical elements, but once opened one would find that they hold evidence of yesterday’s charms.

It’s likely that I’ve mentioned these before, but after 3 years I found myself re-charmed by their existence. They are a delightful commercial element embellishing the river, coining the term 'the only river in the world that runs between 2 bookshelves'.  As a historical staple to scenes of the Seine, these boxes were primarily only used to sell books; Monsieur Hemingway would come to these vendors searching for cheap books in English, but these days one can stroll the Seine and find beautiful botanical prints, old maps, magazines from different eras, Doisneau postcards, and Eiffel tower key chains.

Elegant Seaside Dining

Preparing for a fancy dinner party is no easy task to perform. As with most things however, keeping it simple can really help ease the stress of being the host. To decorate our table, we first decided upon a theme to prepare for. As Savannah is near the ocean, an aquatic motif immediately came to mind.

Mirroring the tones and textures of natural sea life, we utilized our dishes and flatware that best reflected our theme. A muted color palette and simple nautical decor helped reinstate the ambience of dining seaside. Incorporating clean whites and accents of gold added the final touch of elegance, keeping the tablescape simple and tasteful and ready for any dinner party.

Behind the Glass: Mess Hall

If you’ve ever attended a summer camp you’re probably familiar with a mess hall. If you’re new to the term, or never attended a summer camp, a mess hall is nothing more than a room used for serving meals.

Fond memories of sharing a warm meal with fellow campers inspired the display behind this week’s window. After a long day of exploring the wilderness, nothing felt as satisfying as retiring to the hall for a grand feast. With every camper housed under one roof, mealtime was always the best way to make new friends and establish a stronger sense of community. 

Our display artists incorporated some of our greatest vintage products in order to keep the nostalgic feel present. Antique bottles, fishing baskets, old lanterns, tin cups and vintage plates and bowls make up the bulk of the display, and are all items that we remember dearly.
