The weather has been unusually dreary lately. Spring showers are one thing, but the past week has been overwhelmingly rainy, especially for us southerners! Every now and then it takes a little pop of color to lift our spirits and today we definitely need to see some vibrance! With the forthcoming celebration of St. Patrick's Day and the lush greenery we typically associate with spring, we can't think of any color that feels more right today than the color green. The Gift of Color

Now that we're heading deep into the Winter months, where the sky always seems to tend towards a constant overcast and the temperature manages to hover around freezing, our surroundings have the ability to feel somewhat bleak. It's times like these that help us remember how much we are affected by color. The slate grey sky of winter can so easily make us feel blue, which is why we've chosen to line our table with shades of pink! The Flavors of the Season

Yes, Oktoberfest may have already come and gone, but that's ok because we're still enjoying the flavors of the season! October is a great month for trying new beverages, especially if you're a fan of beer. With so many breweries crafting new recipes of Pumpkin Ales and Oktoberfest style beers it's hard not to get sucked into the trend. As the days continue to get cooler and the leaves continue to fall, we can't think of a better time to bust out our beer steins to warm up and celebrate the wonderful autumnal season. 

For the Love of Patterns

Lately we've begun incorporating several of our suzanis into our displays throughout the store, and we just can't seem to get enough of these colorful textiles! As we've become more and more enamored with these patterned fabrics, we were curious to know a bit more of their history as well. Originating in Central Asian countries like Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan, Suzanis are traditional decorative tribal textiles that are full of both color and pattern. Common design motifs include flowers, leaves, vines, fish, birds and the sun and the moon, all of which recur throughout the textiles. Traditionally, Suzanis were created by Central Asian brides by hand as part of their dowry and would later be presented to the groom on their wedding day. Typically made using cotton or silk, it was common practice to create suzanis in two or more pieces that would later be stitched together.

The Color of Creativity

One of our favorite new displays is tucked away in a cozy corner located in the downstairs of our store. Surrounded by beautifully exposed brick walls, our artist's loft themed display fills the room with an expressive energy from all the vibrant colors found throughout. Just as a painter might brush a swatch of color onto canvas, our loft display is color blocked to help liven the space and keep the eye moving around around the room. Bold patterns found in our pillows and suzani textiles add visual interest and a strong sense of design. The addition of candles and hour glasses amidst the colorful room provide a sense of serenity to this creative space, ensuring the focus and comfort of an artist about to pick up their brush.
