Postcards from Paris: {Le Train Bleu}

Even after a two week holiday, the idea of travel never ceases to amuse me. The simple thought of train rides and train stations is invigorating enough, but an opportunity to be in the middle of it increases my excitement.
There is a bien-connu restaurant in Le Gare de Lyon, called Le Bleu Train that overlooks passengers departing and arriving into Paris. It is another exhaustingly ornate, beautiful, decadent restaurant with formal suited waiters carrying silver trays and linens drapped over their arms. This very scene is amongst Paris’ many beautiful restaurants, but the difference is that one can live vicariously as a traveller with all of the thrill without the stress of time.
I met a friend there to catch up with each other and to indulge in a deluxe cup of chocolat chaud. We conversed through several changing phases of patrons, who came in with suitcases and tickets in envelopes, and were off to either venture into the city or to voyage onwards.
The restaurant is named after a luxury express train with the same name. Le Bleu Train stopped running in 2007, after operating for 121 years. It was a status train, taking the wealthy and the famous passenger between Calais and the French Riviera during two decades before World War II. Initially called, the Calais-Mediterranée Express, after World War II it formally changed to Le Bleu Train because of its dark blue sleeping cars.
The restaurant has captured the idealistic lifestyle of what we imagine it must have been like on the train back and forth Calais and the French Riviera. We are just grateful to have the option of choosing a vicarious afternoon of travel or one of luxury and decadence, or both.
Bisous,
Reba

Our Customers behind the Lens!

We love our customers.
That's a fact.
From our Americano with a splash of soy regulars to the one time shoppers from up North, we love them all! Seeing the faces of our lovely guests in our store is amazing, but what is even more amazing is what's going on behind the scenes. Since our new appearance on Instagram, we have been (happily) hit hard by the world of voices and vision from our customers and fans. We love to see what inspires them    as they go behind the lens and document their visit to The Paris Market.
Here are some of our favorites!

Through the Glass: Oh Baby!

Our first windows of the 2013 year are up and they celebrate everything baby!
If you peek through the glass you'll see an oversized toy train from the 1940s, vintage school maps, and  enough knitted plush toys to make any little human squeal.

Step inside The Paris Market and visit our baby section; stuffed full with linen dresses, wooden tops, and everything that makes being a little one so magical!

Postcards from Paris: {Black Forest Reflections / King for the Year}

Gray and damp describes Germany's Black Forest quite accurately, and though we always hoped for snow to emphasize winter, no one seemed to mind the lack of.
This region of Germany is quite special, mostly because it is where our dear Kelsey calls home, and where her parents still reside in a town called Kandern. The daylight only lasts a few hours, and never changing from the gray morning light. The air always smelled of woodburning stoves, and the scent would bury itself deep within the fibers of our clothing, even after a short walk to pick up pretzels from the bakery.Such a sentimental way to end 2012.

I have since returned to Paris, happily replaying the Black Forest memories in my head until my New Year's resolutions begin the kick in. The boulangeries in Paris are still all filled with Galette des Rois, and as I pass the elementary schools I see several children wearing crowns on their heads.
Oh, to be king for a year!
What a charming way to end the beautiful holiday season, eating almond cake in hopes to be crowned.
I wish you all a wonderful 2013.
Bonne Année!

Bisous,
Reba

Black & White

As an artist, I couldn't ask to work in a more inspiring place. The Paris Market, in so many ways, feeds a part of my creative soul many other brick and mortar outlets are hard pressed to find. A true feast for the mind lies within these walls (I may be a bit jaded but to me its the truth). Finding inspiration as a blogger isn't hard here, nor is it hard to walk away with some piece of design influence to use in my own home.
In 2013, I have resolved to concentrate on the details.
To look at life, art, and self with a set of fresh eyes.
And to be true to myself, I work in a place that concentrates on just that. Whether its the turn of the century light bulb mounted on a frame and turned into a piece of art, or the fungi covered table setting that brings the true meaning of garden party; the Paris Market has always celebrated the unique, forlorn items of the past and turned them into something to be treasured and adored.

So here's to the New Year, to slowing down, to filling our lives with the love of worlds past, and to realizing that the world is not just Black and White but an array of beautiful shades of Grey.

yours faithfully,
blogger . photographer . kindred spirit

Pretty Plates by John Derian

We have a serious crush on John Derian.
Our shelves have snuggled up with his beautiful pieces for sometime and we couldn't be more head over heels with his newest line of product love.

John Derian Company Inc. was established in 1989. John's decoupage plates, platters, paperweights, coasters and bowls are handmade in his studio in New York City, where he employs a small staff of artisans to assist with production.

His designs are sold at upscale home stores, in catalogs, and gift shops worldwide. The full range of John Derian pieces, including his ephemera and furniture line, is available at his own retail shops in the East Village where he also carries vintage and antique imports, bed and table linens, stationery, plate-ware (our personal favorite!), vintage and new lighting, and an ever-changing assortment of one-of-a-kind curios.

The shop, John’s work and homes have been featured in Vogue, Vogue Living, The New York Times Home Magazine, The World of Interiors, Elle Décor, Vanity Fair, Domino, Lucky, House and Garden, Country Living, and House Beautiful, to name a few.

If you are a past, present, or future fan of John Derian, swing by The Paris Market to see his pieces beautifully displayed within our walls. For more on his imaginative world of work, visit here.
