Holiday Inspiration: Mercury Glass Ornaments

Always a Paris Market favorite, silvered "mercury" glass is considered one of the first true "art glass" types, that is, glass that was made for display and for its inherent artistic value rather than for utilitarian use. Originally produced in the Czech Republic dating back to roughly 1840, mercury glass quickly became popular throughout Germany and England before making its way to the United States. In order to create mercury glass, a glassblower must make a double walled glass first, while adding silver between the layers with a liquid silvering solution, which is then sealed. Although mercury was originally used to provide the reflective coating for mirrors, elemental mercury was never used to create tableware. Nowadays, traditional techniques are no longer implemented, including the double wall and solid bottom found in authentic mercury glass decorations. Call us old fashioned, but mercury glass ornaments never seem to go out of style! Eternally classic and always beautiful, the silvery shine of mercury glass always adds that extra Christmas glint to the rest of our holiday decor!

Fall's Favorite Accessory

There's a chill in the air today which means it's time to bring out Fall's most essential accessory, the scarf! What's great about scarves is how wonderfully they keep you warm and how easily they can be removed when no longer needed. On days like today where the weather is cool but not freezing, a sweater might be too much, however a scarf seems to be just right. Our current collection of scarves are inspired by classic designs and patterns that will undoubtedly spruce up any outfit and keep you fashionable and comfortable through the cooler days ahead.

Currently Inspired: Vintage Beer Steins

Collected from every imaginable corner of Germany, our bar is now fully stocked with these beautiful authentic beer steins! Adorned in a variety of historical motifs, these decorative mugs are gorgeous, humorous, ornate, kitsch, and classic all at the same time. Perfect for any collector or beer drinker, our steins are available in several shapes and sizes. If you're like us and curious as to what the word stein means, it is derived from the German word for stone, as many beer steins were traditionally made out of stoneware. It is said the pewter lids adorning the tops of the mugs came in to use around the time of the Black Plague in an effort to prevent diseased insects from falling into the steins. It's near impossible to pick out a favorite or even several favorites, so we'll just highlight a few mugs that we find interesting.

Cheers!

The Cycle of Savannah

One of the greatest perks of being located in the heart of Savannah's historic district is the ability to bike anywhere. Now that summer is in full swing and tour buses are filling the streets of downtown, attempting to drive has the potential to be somewhat of a headache, especially if you're hoping to find a parking spot. Besides, there really is no greater way to take in all of Savannah's beauty than by being up close on a bike, feeling the balmy breeze as you ride. Recently acquiring a beautiful vintage bicycle from England, we soon realized accessories were an absolute must. There's nothing more convenient than having a bike basket to carry your groceries, fresh baguettes, wine, or any other treasures you may find biking around town. It's always important to practice safety, and there's nothing as classic as a good ol' fashioned bell to let others know you're cruising through town. Just in case you find yourself in a mechanical emergency, we have the perfect pocket-sized tool kit for quick, on-the-go repairs.

Cruise on down to the historic district and enjoy all the beauty Savannah has to offer! See you on the streets!
