creating with tape
This colorful tape is a nice little material to add to your repertoire of creation.
Sometimes its nice to chill with the charcoal and the oils and just have fun with a simple material. When you relax, you end up with new ideas and new directions. Check out this little beauty:

National Stationary Show

Paper, Pastis, Proseco (and James Franco)
I met up with the Paris Market girls at Pastis last night in the meatpacking district for Day 2/3 of the NYC – Paper adventure. We ate with James Franco. He was 5 tables away but who's counting. I just saw him recently in HOWL actually, where he plays a young Allen Ginsburg. It was shown right here at Muse Arts last December and he was very good in it. And, he looks just as hot in real life. Voila,
After collectively indulging in steak with béarnaise sauce, pea and mint raviolis, fish and chips, cheeseburgers, and some jack and ginger (jack and ginger was a new and delightful experience for me, feels like a feminine variation on the vodka tonic) we caught a cab over to ABC on Broadway but they had just closed! That's okay, we had only to look across the street to find Fish’s Eddy, where we perused their fresh catches (Paula had some porcelain hands sent home) and I picked up some things too, since my cats are  on a chronic mission to destroy my glassware. Then we walked up to 23rd street and discovered Eatily.

YES, EATILY. A super huge gourmet marketplace with everything imported from Italy, and best described in their words..."We sell what we cook and we cook what we sell" And I heard Italian in every aisle, which is the stamp of authenticity for me. They have a bar, a restaurant...its like the place is a giant homage to indulging in all the best things in life –food, friends, family. Everyone used to be obsessed with Dean & Deluca, but our new lustful infatuation is with Eatily…
Proseco in jelly form. YES.

cute little yogurt cup

Paula and the girls grabbed some Proseco for a nightcap, and I grabbed a cab back to Grand Central, all the while thinking that I needed to get into the city more often, or at least start planning more adventures -wherever I happen to be.
oh yeah. paper. Still gathering intelligence and images on the actual paper show. I mean, when James Franco starts off the night, its easy to loose your original thought.

 ciao ciao,

For the Love of Paper

Paper Paper Everywhere
The National Stationery Show

The National Stationery Show kicked off this Sunday at the Javits Center in New York City, and some of The Paris Market team is there as we speak, taking in the magic.
I’ll be blogging more about that on Tuesday. Till then, feast your eyes on some of the great papers we have right here in the store. From sweet classic prints to more graphic styles, they are all just luscious in color.

It's not just really awesome wrapping paper, its also great for scrapbooking, making cards, covering boxes or books, collage, decoupage, lining the inside of a hutch or cabinet, a set of drawers, you name it. If there is anything you want to make special, you can do it with this paper.

Attention! Summer Hats are Here!

One Great Hat
Sleek and Chic in Summer's Heat
As a Leo, I am astrologically ruled by the sun, but that doesn’t mean wrinkles have to be part of the deal or that I must always don sunglasses while I’m flipping through Vogue out on Tybee.
All you need is one great hat.

And my search for the perfect beach hat is finally over. We just got in a nice fresh heaping of hats earlier this week; in a great selection in cotton, raffia, and straw. And I want to let you know they are going fast, one style in particular- a great big floppy brim straw hat, is literally flying off the shelves. That’s available in light beige, tobacco, gray, and black and white.

Hats, also, for some reason I can’t quite articulate, put an instant air of charm and romance around you. It’s a sort of mysterious sophistication - maybe it’s the added height and dimension that extends your presence just a little bit more. And beach hats in particular only get better with age – a little broken in, a little softened up, maybe slightly tattered, gently acquiring that salty air beach smell...
 Ah, summer…a Leo’s paradise of a season.

French Wines for Summer

Taste & Terroir
Le Chai with Christian Depken
I sat down with Christian Depken, owner of Le Chai (pronounced “shay”) the wine shop on DeSoto Street in the Starland District to get a few educated words on wines and what might make a refreshing pairing for my summer eating.  For those of you who don’t know, Mr. Depken is a totally unpretentious, nice guy who will take the time to explain everything you want to know about wine –and I have yet to buy a bottle from him that hasn’t been perfect. He chooses to work in Old World wines, because countries like France (French wines considered the benchmark) have been at it the longest and really understand their Terroir. What is Terroir?
Mr. Depken explained that terroir is everything that goes into making a place, well, a place. It's the unique specicifity of that place. Terroir is the sun, the soil, the water, the climate; and how the individuality of a place affects everything grown there. – including grapes. I understand this, my husband says that North Carolina has the best tomatoes, that they tastes more like a juicy fruit than a vegetable. It's also why I finally convinced my mother that ferns will do great in the moist shady spot in the garden and not so much her roses. But, I digress.
So what’s good for the summer?

Without question, Rosé. And a good Rosé will actually have more of a copper color.
But it's perfect for summer. Don’t be afraid of Rosé, embrace Rosé!
It's lighter than a red, sturdier than a white. In short, lovely for summer.
Recommendation: Louis de Grenelle Corail, a sparkling rose from Saumur, France.

Next up is Vouvray, also from the Loire Valley, and made from the Chenin Blanc grape. This wine goes great with shellfish of any kind. So pair this with shrimp, lobster, scallops, etc. I’m already thinking about those fresh Georgia shrimp from Tybee to go with this Vouvray.

With a summer steak you would want an acidic wine, with a higher level of tannins,
so a Chinon would be great.
Raise a glass and celebrate another day of life! En bonne santé!

The above stemless wine glass etched with Rosé
is also available etched with Rouge and Blanc.
We also have many more wine glasses, carafes,
decanters etc. for you to choose from.

Pressed Flowers

memory
Across the street from where I grew up there was an old gray house, largely abandoned.
The owner came by from time to time only to collect his mail and rake the leaves. From the street, you could see it had fallen into disrepair -the paint had worn away as much in places to expose bare wood, the shutters were crooked, the gutters stopped up...
But the backyard was a wildfire of Goldenrod, Queen Anne’s Lace, daisies, little blue flowers and lots of birds...it was really teeming with life and vibrancy. That’s what I remember now when I look at these, that while the house suffered neglect, all this life and color continued to spring up.
These are just a few of the pressed flowers we have here,
framed and ready to go on your wall.

Orange Peel Perfection

real genius
I’m not sure who the genius was who decided to put coffee bars in stores.
But it is Genius. For women, for men, for children, for all. (and we have a great coffee bar here too.)

Everyone needs to take a break and get off their feet for a little bit, have
some coffee and a little nosh before soldiering on to more great shopping.

To celebrate this genius, and the summer months ahead, We've created “Orange Peel Perfection”
- a blended milk & mandarin flavored ice granita, topped with a poof of whipped cream. YUM.
...just thought you'd like to know...

Postcards from Paris: {Le "je t'aime" Mur}

'Tis the season of travel, and with the many tourists in town my ears ring with complete comprehension. I expressed to a fellow American how I actually don't find much comfort in hearing English on the streets of Paris. In response he said that he just pretends it's French he hears and understands it completely.
I've taken on that concept as my own, if only it worked the same with conversation.
As for the French language, things are developing just as they should be, and as for the diversity of languages travelling through Paris I do enjoy the game of placement. It's not only English I hear, but Italian, Russian, Spanish, Mandarin, etc. In the spirit of the subject, I take you to the wall of many "I love you's" located right off from the metro stop Abbesses. Each time I have come to this little spot of international effection, the sun light speckles through the leaves, there are always pigeons on the ledge, and there is always muffled conversations in some language I don't understand, along with photographs snapped of smiling travellers standing next to, or pointing at, the written phrase which matches their spoken language.
It's amazing that each time I think of someplace else to live, my love for this city resurfaces. That's what love does I suppose. So I lieu of love and of Paris, enjoy this little clip from my friend.

P.S. Remember this Sunday to tell the mums in your life you love them, be it in French, Spanish, English etc.

Mother's Day at The Paris Market

a guide.
I’ll be seeing my mom in New York soon, and per Reba’s post, giving her a bunch of Lily of the Valley seems so much more sophisticated then what the little de rosa kids did for mommy: Homemade breakfast in bed (probably not that good) served on the metal foldout strawberry shortcake tray, and tulips and daffodils ripped from the backyard and thrown in a glass of water. (we tried to chic it up as best we could.) “You didn’t rip up all of them did you?” she asked.
This year maybe you’ll get something from Paris Market, Mom! Wouldn’t that be nice?
There is literally something for every Mom in this store,
so take a look and get down here...

Alors,

I would start with a great tray from John Derian. THIS is one of my favorites.

Then, I would add a sweet little bottle of perfume.

Of course there is always a fabulous selection of Art and Design books...

And if a super rad, adventurous, edgy woman is your Mom, I suggest this. LOVE!

See you this weekend & get your Mom something Good!

Postcards from Paris: {Le Petit Monde de Violette}

A few steps away from Place Monge, one can be smitten by The Little World of Violette. Painted on the window in worn gold paint one is welcomed to Le Petit Monde de Violette. I met Violette through a friend who used to live in this quartier. She found herself amazed by Violette's world each time she would walk to the metro. She recalled an evening either coming or going where Violette and her array of eccentric friends were all gathered in front. Strings of lights were shining, music was playing, and tables were set up with flowers and food. That is what I call a business. Not only is the store composed of bundles and bouquets of flowers, but also amongst the sweet scents and colors nature provides, Violette contributes with her own statuettes of scarecrows and giraffes made with straw and twine, along paper mâché animals peering from behind the window. Most of her merchandise is laid out in front of her shop, but I found myself curious looking through the glass framed by antique lace to discover her various collections of gnomes and portraits hanging on the back wall each of embellished in intricate gold frames.
She showed me her Muguets that she was ready to sell the following day, to welcome the month of May.
She had such a comforting smile when she spoke of her flowers. She seemed so willing to share her world.
Le Petit Monde de Violette
83 rue Monge
75005, Paris .
Les Muguets are small, delicate flowers, with a fresh spring scent. Known as Lily of the Valley in english. They are the flower for the month of May.
They are traditionally given to mothers, and to those who work on May 1st, and given any opportunity to inhale the lovely scent from les muguets I would recommend taking advantage of doing so.
HAPPY MAY!
Bisous,
