Postcards from Paris: {Mmm..Ça sent bon.}

 I can't bring myself to throw out my empty bottles of perfume bottles. I store them in a small leather bag on my bookshelf. It's not everyday that I come across my little collection, but when the occasion arises and I find myself inhaling the remaining essences left from their pretty little bottles, I am immediately transported to that phase of my life where each day I would spray on that scent. What a wonder it is that a distinct smell can be a time-machine, taking one back to the small memories made years ago.
I just finished Patrick
Süskind's novel Perfume. Throughout reading it has sparked an urge to visit the Parfumeries in Paris. There are a couple of Herboristeries I have noticed around my neighborhood, who seem to still offer the charm of specificity in scents. I struck up a conversation with a white-haired woman behind the counter, who wore delicate gold-wired glasses, the type that look as though they are wrapped entirely around the ears. I asked her questions that may very well only pertain to that of a professional Perfumer, but she seemed eager to answer. She explained the importance of Le Nez, and the skill of picking apart the individual scent from the compiled essence. As an Herb Specialiste, she continued that certain scents have medicinal benefits, thus the term Aromatherapy. The scent of Rosemary can be a de-stresser, a small wiff of cinnamon apparently can help with Asthma, and can give a spark of energy, while Lavender soothes.And yet, each of the aromas brought back certain memories of my own.
I thought, "well the scent of Lavender reminds me of Provence, while Chanel's Chance reminds me of Paris."

The Paris Market has itself a little spot in the back for those ready to take on a new scent.
Fresh's Cannabis-Santal makes me think of Autumn.
Tocca's Giullieta reminds me of Spring.
Cleopatra always brings me to thoughts of Summer.

Bisous,
Reba

Sporty Pencils

We just got these awesome mechanical pencils into the store,
Kaweco Sport Pencils!
We have both the .7 mm and 3.2 mm lead size. And they’re going fast because of their classic look and nice fat grip. Artists go ga-ga over these pencils.

And look what you can do with them:

I love thinking about pencils as sporty little objects that you covet and want to protect and cherish and need to take with you. Pencils are pretty sporty things actually - limited only by the human imagination! Think of all the writing and drawing they do everyday, and in such a stylish form. And most artists do have favorite pencils like writers have favorite notepads and journals. or typewriters. These Kaweco pencils are one item I can see becoming a fast favorite. (look for them by the register)

Happy Father's Day: Let's go shopping for Dad...

Very few Dad’s like to go shopping, so we can have fun for them…
 These are my picks for Dad:

(1. Bug in lucite  2. Eau de Senteur  3. Body Cleanser  4. Shot Glass  5. Vintage Flashlight  6. Finger Sponge  7. Pipe Case  8. Matches  9. Gypsum Spikes  10. Turtle Shell  11. Growth (te neues) 12. Pearl Picture Frame  13. Advice Tray  14. Kodak Brownie)

If you gave a man a bag of everything he needed to build a car, he would dive in and complete it in no time. But if you gave a man a picture frame he would have absolutely no idea what to do with it. So, put a picture of yourself in it and he’ll get it! The message in his brain will be something like “Oh, a picture of my child, that’s different. It stands up, so maybe I should put it on my desk” He’ll put it on his desk and you’ll be happy…
 (your picture here for Dad)

-but look, you can’t pull this picture frame trick every year! (that's just narcissistic)

If your Dad is a man’s man, he’s probably pretty stinky most of the time. I suggest this:
He’ll think. “Oh, body cleanser. What is this? Oh, hang on, I may have read an article about this somewhere.” He’ll think its funny you bought him soap, you’ll mistake his smile for gratefulness and you’ll be happy.

moving on...
For a young, sexy Dad that you're currently in cahoots with, I suggest this Smell Good Daily Tonic. It's Eau de Senteur – in Vetiver. Yum yum yum. This is the fragrance equivalent of electronics – you can’t go wrong! The olfactory sense is extremely powerful and I bet a lot of men could become daddies wearing this!

My feeling towards men is that they have always been very onward and upward. Haha.
If I could re-name Man, I would name him Homo Sapiens Excelsior. So if your Dad has that spirit, I suggest this book entitled Growth. Vibrant photographs narrating the positives and negatives of unbridled growth. These photographs make you feel, but they also make you think.

Speaking of photographs, if your Dad is into photography, we have a really cool assortment of ambrotypes, glass negatives and vintage cameras like this classic Brownie.

I love this flashlight for Dad. Dad’s are all about flashlights, jumper cables and the emergency $20 in the glove compartment. God bless ‘em!

Is your Dad a smoker? May I suggest a pipe case and some matches. Guys like matches, because they can start fires with them.
Of course Dad can always use a nice tray to throw his keys and loose change in. Personally, I like the advice tray. Dad's love to give it, but they hate taking it. It's okay, Dad. I don't like take taking advice either. But you knew that.

Most Dads also like things you can find in nature. Like the awesome turtle shell above. Or a bug.

My Dad always released the spiders in our house back into the backyard which drove my Mom crazy, who enjoyed sending them into their next life with a quick smack of her slipper. Sometimes where Mom’s are ruthless, Dad’s can be gentle. Sort of:

Oh and of course…Dad probably deserves a shot or two of something. Right?

Yes, c'mon. Dad deserves it.

HAPPY FATHER's DAY DADS!

Postcards from Paris: {Un coup d'œil au cinéma: Midnight in Paris}

Many of Woody Allen's films define specific memories, mainly ones from my college days in Savannah. For instance, Hannah and Her Sisters will always remind me of one specific Thanksgiving holiday where two dear friends and myself checked out a stack full of DVDs from the Savannah Public Library, one of the DVDs was Hannah and Her Sisters. We made homemade pizza, and hot cocoa. Whenever I rewatch that film, or even think about it, I instantly think of the small memories that made up that day. The list of memories goes on along with the list of Woody Allen films, more so his earlier ones circa Diane Keaton or Mia Farrow, opposed to circa Scarlett Johansson. In fact, for me at least, his newer ones, though not terrible, lacked an emotional tie-in. That is until his recent release, Midnight in Paris, which seemed to capture the charm and wit of his earlier work.
I left the theatre loving Paris even more.
I was really sold in the beginning while Sidney Bechet's "Petite Fleur" played as scenes from the city seem to captivate even the Parisians surrounding me.

Postcards from Paris: {Aquarium de Paris}

 Before I title myself as a pessimist, I should give the disclaimer that I've gone to the Atlanta Aquarium on more than one occasion, and whale-sharks named after The Honeymooners is a difficult act to compete against, even if there is a movie theatre and a perfect view of the Eiffel Tower greeting you as you exit. I will say that any peak at life forms living under water is an unceasing curiosity. It is quite amazing the difference in appearance that those living underwater all their lives have compared to us creatures on dry-land. I must say they all take rather flattering profile shots.
William Beebe, an American marine biologist, said, "I can only think of one experience which might exceed in interest a few hours spent under water, and that would be a journey to Mars."
Even simple notions of the sea, like shells, become sentimental reminders of our explorations. At my parents' home there is still a necklace of small strung shells that I spent one summer making after a memorable trip to an island off South Carolina. In that very necklace I am reminded of my explorations I had with my brothers; catching starfish and sand-dollars, the differences in the size of the waves and temperatures depending on low-tide and high-tide, jelly-fish stings, and dolphins in the distance.
At the Shop, we always get the most interesting packages of sealife. The smell that fills the store while the shells are being unwrapped is debatable. One can make the point that the scent of fish is hardly a scent that sells, but sometimes the simple smell of sea-water is all that resonates, which surfaces the deep-sea memories of Summer. Good Finds: the stamp book

Little Treasures
Who would have guessed that this little brown book contained such a trove of treasure.

Voila...
It's just a few pages, but its a gorgeous little book. And because the stamps have been tucked away inside, they've been protected from the light and have retained the original richness and vibrancy of their pigments. Yum!

We also have little pochets of stamps chock full of little beauties. A few of my favorites:

This one reminds me of The Little Prince

What is it about having something old and beautiful that makes it so precious?
An extended memory or view into the past? a quest for immortality, albeit backwards?
Or maybe it just nice to hold a little piece of time in your hand. A little treasure just for you.
